About the Artist:

Slavko Kopač (August 21, 1913 – November 23, 1995) was a French painter, sculptor and poet.

Kopač received his degree from the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb in 1937. Following his graduation, he was awarded a scholarship from the French government to study in Paris as a young artist. In 1943, he continued his studies in Florence, focusing on philosophy and the history of art until 1948. During this time, he began to break away from traditional academicism and joined the ranks of some of the most influential artists of the 20th century. In 1948, he permanently settled in Paris, where he co-founded the Compagnie de l'Art Brut with Jean Dubuffet, André Breton, and Michel Tapié.

For the next 30 years, he led and curated the Art brut collection. He also worked closely with André Breton, who organized exhibitions for his work at his gallery, À l'Étoile scellée. Kopač was recognized for his contributions to Art informel, being featured in Michel Tapié’s book: Un Art Autre.

He exhibited in Zagreb, Florence, Rome and Paris.
