This piece frames a piece of old, hand-woven vintage Indonesian Savu Ikat.
Regarded highly in Indonesia and esteemed for their superior quality, handcrafted Savunese textiles are truly some of the best in the entire Indonesian archipelago, rooted in centuries-old traditions of Indonesian weaving. Each piece is meticulously handwoven by skilled artisans, and dyed using natural plant dyes, often taking anywhere from 3 - 6 months per piece to complete, making it a unique work of art. Ikat patterns of weaving are handed down as a taught skill from generation to generation - it is a rare art in decline. We feel very fortunate to be able to source & support this art, in our own indirect way.
This framed piece highlights the real art and skill required to create this kind of textile. Each line woven in, creating an extremely tight weave and intricate pattern work.
